Food To Eat While Watching Wimbledon

Posted: 26 June 2017

Strawberries and cream – the most obvious (and unimaginative) accompaniment to the Wimbledon tennis finals. Not that we’ve anything against this delightfully decadent dessert…quite the opposite, in fact! It’s just that when it comes to the most important and enjoyable events of the year, we’re all for getting a little more creative!

So if you’re setting yourself up for a little Wimbledon live action at home this year, here’s a quick rundown of a few foods you might want to ‘serve’ up alongside the event:

The Ultimate BBQ

Believe it or not, barbecue food doesn’t have to mean the usual bangers, bacon and burgers. Instead, it can be about the most delicious dry-rubs for exotic meats, melt-in-the-mouth ribs, heavenly pulled pork, the most beautiful buffalo wings and sides you’d happily sing for! For one game at least, throw your usual barbecue ideas in the bin and get creative. And if you’re stuck for inspiration, join us for one of our BBQ cooking classes in London and we’ll show you the ropes!

Classic Fish and Chips

If you thought Wimbledon was exclusively about fine dining, you might be surprised to hear that this Great British staple really is part of the furniture. Each year, more than 33,000 portions of fish and chips are served to hungry spectators – an interesting accompaniment to the 200,000 glasses of Pimm’s! If you’ve never tried whipping up your own (proper) fish and chips, there’s no time like right now.

Tempting Tapas

Tapas dishes are just brilliant in every way. The size of snacks but all the flavour of full-on dishes, not to mention dozens of incredible flavours to mix and match any way you wish! The best part being that tapas dishes don’t need to be difficult or expensive to make. Get started ahead of time and when the action starts, you could be tucking into chorizo in red wine, Spanish tortilla, garlic prawns, meatballs in sauce, marinated feta and pretty much anything else you fancy. Washed down with a glass or two of good Spanish wine, it’s the stuff amazing summer afternoons are made of!

Strawberry Mousse

If you thought mousse was all about an uninspiring ‘blob’ on a plate, think again! This humble yet delicious dessert staple can be transformed into some of the most elegant and downright stunning creations imaginable – all perfect for Wimbledon! Design your own classic French patisserie creation, go wild with a strawberry mouse layer cake or…well, do with it as you wish! Once again, you can always rely on us for a few pointers, if you need a little help!

Wimbledon’s answer to the classic hot dog, Dutchees follow the same basic principle – a sausage and a bun. However, this uniquely spiced and perfectly porky gap-filler is one of the highlights of the fortnight for many. A posh hot dog that sells to the tune of more than 60,000 each year. You’d be amazed how easy it is to enhance and improve classic BBQ staples when you give it some thought!

Sublime Sushi

Last up, when the weather’s at its hottest and you’re out for a dish that’s as cool and refreshing as it is delicious, what’s better than sushi? Sure, it’s messy to make and takes some time to get right, but the stuff you make with your own hands always tastes so much better than any you’ll ever buy. Plus there’s the bonus of being able to get as creative as you like with the fillings – you’d be surprised what kinds of oddities make great sushi staple substitutes! Grab yourself a kit and get stuck in, or book yourself a class if you see yourself as the next sushi master!
