Everything you need for an effective consumer testing workshop!

Posted: 11 May 2022

After 2 years of conducting market research over zoom, food manufacturers are now ready to meet their consumers in person again.

Regardless of the product they’re developing, food and beverage manufacturers all share a common goal – to products of the highest quality and to offer food and drink products that are competitive in taste, nutritional value, and price.

But what does it take to plan and implement a truly successful consumer product testing project? How can you ensure that your next food product testing workshop produces the essential insights and data you need to move on to the next important step?

Follow our top tips on planning the perfect consumer testing workshop and you won’t be disappointed:

1. Make the right venue choice

Ideally, the venue you select should come complete with all the equipment and facilities you’ll need to successfully run the workshop – it’s useful to scope out a few different options before you finalise on a venue to make sure it’s right for you.  Choosing somewhere with sufficient experience and expertise in hosting consumer testing events is also beneficial as they may pick up on things you have missed.

2. Timing is everything

The ideal time and day to host your event should be determined by your target audience. For example, if you intend to invite 20 participants who have children to the event, a daytime workshop while their kids are at school could be ideal. Ensure that the workshop is as convenient as possible for your target audience to attend – this includes location and transport links.

3. Invite more consumers than you need

For each session, it is highly recommended that you over invite the number of consumers you need in case of no shows – having hosted many consumer testing workshops we know that this happens more often than not.

Stage 4: Provide clear instructions ahead of time

There may be certain foods or drinks you’d prefer your guests to avoid in the hours running up to the event, in order to preserve their taste buds. So it’s up to you to let them know ahead of time to ensure you get the best results.
